Greens Urge Territorians to Keep Lobbying NTG
The Greens NT are urging Territorians to continue to lobby the NT Government to hear their concerns about uranium mining at Angela and Pamela deposits 21km from Alice Springs.
This was in response to The Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources (DRDPIFR) granting Cameco Australia and Paladin Energy Minerals an exploration licence over the Angela and Pamela uranium prospects in central Australia.
At a protest held on Sunday Greens Alderman Jane Clark said, "Central Australian leaders need to actively stand up and convey our opposition to this development. We have not received evidence that our water and air quality will be maintained at current levels despite requests by Alice Springs Town Council for the NT Government to supply this information. Spin and glossy leaflets from the potential mining companies do not go anywhere near addressing the seriousness and complexity of the issues that Alice Springs faces.
"The Tourism and Pastoral Industries are our major economic base and they will be adversely affected by uranium mining long before it starts. These industries are strong because of our clean healthy environment and once this image has been damaged, it will be very hard to re-establish."
