International Women's Day
International Women's Day is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.
Mayoral Candidate and current Alderman Jane Clark, said, "In the NT we can be proud of our record for electing women to all areas of government. Alice Springs Town Council is one of the few in Australia to have a majority of women with 6 female Alderman and currently 3 men (another 2 have vacated). This trend has continued across the Territory with our female Mayor in Katherine and a female head of the Local Government Association of NT, along with strong female representation in the Territory Government. This reflects the open attitude of many Territorians where people are able to move ahead because of their skills and hard work regardless of background. Conversations with members of the Women in Local Government group, have revealed to me that in other states, there is still a battle for females to be considered equals in all tiers of government. At National conferences, the NT contingent often stands out as a group of strong women amongst a sea of men and it's actually quite empowering to see how far ahead the Territory is in this regard. If elected I will continue to represent the interests of women, and men, noting the achievements and needs of all members of the Alice community."
