It's Not Easy Being Green
Letter to the Editor - Advocate Feb 15 2008
I was amazed to find that Council had discussed in public my intention to run for Mayor as a Green without me being present to defend myself. I would have been at the meeting but was at the hospital with a sick child. I was also not given any prior notice of the impending motion of condemnation. Let's get one thing straight. I personally have chosen to stand for Mayor of Alice Springs as a Green. It's no secret that I am a member of the Greens and I have chosen not to hide this fact. If other candidates find this inappropriate, then they don't have to declare their allegiance to a political party, or their holding of office-bearer positions in the branches of those political parties.
I have always been forthright and open about who I am and what I stand for. I won't be intimidated because of that. I also do not believe I should be directed to pretend I do not have any political affiliations. Let's, as a Council, talk about better ways to serve the town rather than pointing the finger at people like me, who are prepared to declare where they stand. The town will then pass judgement on election day, March 29.
